Pregnancy allows me to recognize yet another thing we have in common as humans. We ask really inappropriate questions during inopportune times. During my pregnancy (I kid you not), I’ve heard all of the following:
- “So, how much weight have you gained?”
- “You’re getting Bi-Ig!” (for some reason people feel the need to sing the last word)
- From a co-worker (not friend): “Are you coming back to work?”
- Again, from a co-worker screaming across a cubicle: “Did you pass your glucose exam?”
- More than one complete stranger on the elevator ride to work: “So, when are you due?”
Aside from the occassional verbal assault I’ve also taken note of non-verbal behaviors such as co-workers passing me and saying hello all the while staring straight at my rotund baby belly (eh-hem, mountain). I imagine they’re thinking one of the following phrases: “Wow she’s getting bi-Ig” or “Getting close” or worse, “Is her water going to break at work? Would I have to clean that up?”
Other non-verbal observations include the anxiety a round belly causes some folks. They have a case of Butterfly McQueen’s sentiment in Gone with the Wind–”I ain’t never birthed no babies!”
I get it, I get it, in your eyes I’m a ticking time bomb. When my water breaks, I’ll try to keep myself from aiming at your shoes.
I have always found it extremely weird that people will go up and rub the pregnant belly!
So did you pass your glucose exam?
With flying colors, Blake. With flying colors.
Better yet,..co-workers/clients asking if you going to delivery …”normal” (yet they do not use that word more often starts w/a ‘v’) or C-section; did you/are you going to have an episiotomy, then of course, breast feeing? …uh, nun-ya business
, I would think work would be the one place I would not be asked those questions.
Just wait until 38-39 weeks Leigh,..the question only get worse as you get bigger!
The good news is my client this week,..they have pregnant lady parking
. Love that perk!
Hang in there and enjoy all of the attention!
I agree, Mandi. I don’t mind with friends and family but it’s really odd when co-workers think it’s OK. Just odd, really.
What is a glucose exam? (do I want to know?)
You dont know how much I wanted to touch your belly…until I looked into your eyes and it struck the fear of God into me. I am scared of women and especially pregnant ones, but they sure do have a glow about em:)
I got asked if I was sure I wasn’t having twins… I was only 7 months. My response should have been, “so what’s your excuse for being so big, you’re not pregnant?” but I am a nice person so I just said, No I’m sure there’s only one in there…
Love you girl, you are beautiful!
Honestly after this you get no attention at all, it will all be on sweet baby Reed so I agree with Holly; enjoy the attention while it lasts.
My favorite when Steph was pregnant was when, at only six/seven/eight months pregnant, people would say “you’re about to pop!”.
